Two mega contracts - for
a hydel project in the North East and for a gas fired plant
in Andhra Pradesh spotlights L&T's presence in the power sector.
A. Rs.922-crore Mega
Order For Country's Largest Hydel Project
The ECC Division has bagged
a mega order from National Hydroelectric Power Corporation
Limited (NHPC) for civil and structural work for its 2000
MW (8 x 250MW) Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. Valued
at Rs. 921.6 crore, this prestigious order is ECC's largest
contract for a single package in terms of value.
Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric
Power Plant will generate power from the river Subansiri located
in lower Subansiri District, Arunachal Pradesh and Demaji
District of Assam. On completion, this will be the country's
largest hydel power plant.
Mr. A. Ramakrishna, President
(Operations) and Deputy Managing Director, announced, "L&T-ECC
won this order on the basis of its track record in the hydel
power sector on individual strength against international
competition." Others in the fray included established Indian
and global players such as Jaiprakash Industries, Hindustan
Construction Company, Gammon-Ozaltin (Turkey), Patel-DIC (South
Korea) and Nurol Constructions (Turkey).
The scope of work would
comprise civil works for eight horseshoe-shaped, Head Race
tunnels of 9.5 m dia (of lengths varying from 630 m to 1145
m) and amounting to 7100 m of tunnelling and intake structures;
construction of 236 m x 16 m x 62 m size Surge Chamber with
eight compartments, each measuring 26 m x 16 m x 62 m; eight
Pressure Shafts of 70 m height, 8 m dia, having varying lengths
from 195 m to 212 m, totalling 1628 m; Surface Power House
of 285 m x 61 m x 64 m; Tail Race Tunnel of 206 m (width)
by 35 m and two D-shaped Adit Tunnels of 9 m dia x 450 m length
and 6 m dia x 275 m length. This phase of project work is
scheduled for completion in 72 months.
The work is to be executed
in one of the most difficult terrains of soft rock, and hill
slopes prone to heavy rainfall and landslides. The job involves
handling heavy quantities of excavation, muck removal, back
filling and concreting, steel ribbing, rock bolting and anchoring
to reinforce the tunnelling.
L&T will utilize state-of-the-art tunnelling methodology and
will deploy modern imported equipment to ensure quality, safety
and speed in project execution.
L&T-ECC had recently executed
similar projects successfully in the tough Himalayan reaches
for Tala Hydel Project in Bhutan, and Chilime Hydel Project
in Nepal. Its other ongoing hydel projects are at Varahi (Karnataka),
Khopoli (Maharashtra) and Purulia (West Bengal).
B. Rs.700-crore Power
Plant Order in Andhra Pradesh
The ECC Division has secured
a Rs.700-crore contract for engineering, procurement and construction
of a 388.5 MW power plant near Rajamundry in Andhra Pradesh.
The gas turbine based power plant will be set up for Vemagiri
Power Generation Limited, part of the GMR Group of South India.
The Vemagiri power project
will incorporate the largest gas turbine in India, and the
country's biggest Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG). Designed
to the latest 'F' technology, the turbine will be procured
from General Electric Company, USA. The HRSG will be fabricated
at L&T's works complex in Hazira, near Surat in Gujarat. L&T
will acquire the steam turbine from Alstom of Germany.
The basic and detailed engineering
services will be provided by L&T-Sargent & Lundy Limited.
L&T's Engineering & Construction Division will have the overall
responsibility for completing the project in 24 months, commencing
1st January 2004.
