Mr.
Henning Holck-Larsen, co-founder along with Mr. Soren Kristian Toubro,
of Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) and Chairman Emeritus of the Company
was honoured by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on May 2, 2000.
Mr. Holck-Larsen was presented a silver plaque on the occasion by Mr.
Arun Bharat Ram, President, CII. The plaque read: In honour of Mr. H.Holck-Larsen
for his vision and spirit of entrepreneurship.
Among the speakers who lauded Mr. Holck-Larsen's achievements were Mr.
Pradeep Mallick, Chairman, CII (Western Region), Mr. A. M. Naik, M.D.
& C.E.O., L&T, and Mr. Arun Bharat Ram, President, CII.
Mr. Bharat Ram said: "We are gathered here to honour one who came far
away from home, with a spirit of adventure. In L&T he has left us with
an asset which we can but envy. There are many stories of creation of
wealth, but then Mr. Holck-Larsen created his for India. Mr. Holck-Larsen,
you are an epitome of success and your creation carries the insignia
of excellence. So be proud, because we are proud and honoured to call
you our own."
In his tribute Mr. Naik said: "Mr. Holck-Larsen has been a visionary
par excellence. He had already visualised today's buzzwords a few decades
ago, covering recruitment and promotion by merit, development of indigenous
know-how and capability, export promotion and a high rate of re-investment
of surplus to sustain a rapid rate of growth."
Mr. Holck-Larsen along with his former classmate, Mr. Soren Toubro,
had set up L&T as a partnership in 1938 for importing Danish dairy equipment,
operating from a small room in Ballard Estate, Mumbai. L&T has since
grown into a premier engineering and construction company in India largely
due to Mr.Holck-Larsen's vision which was always in tune with the country's
national goal of self-reliance in industry. Mr. Holck-Larsen prides
himself on being an engineer and, at almost 93, continues to take keen
interest in L&T's activities. He has been honoured with the prestigious
Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding. He has also received
the Sir Jehangir Ghandi Medal for Industrial Peace and the Bombay Chamber
of Commerce and Industry's felicitations on his signal contribution
